Your Favorites

What are three books that have had an impact on you (excluding the standard works)? What do they mean to you? How did they change your life? Or, if books haven't had a huge impact on you, what are some of your favorites for a good read? If you don't have three then just say one. Do you read? If not, why?

One of the books I have read that has had a big impact on me is a book that isn't exactly a page-turner, but it is a great book. It's called Leadership and Self-Deception. I read it for a class soon after Erick and I were married and I have to say that it has probably helped my marriage more than anything else (outside of the gospel)! Why? Because it taught me how to deal with the common problems that arise in normal marriage. Basically it teaches how to communicate with others and to always see people as people and not objects. I'm still thinking about my other two favorite books...

I also love Leadership and Self-deception---great read!! I would say my faves are Standing for Something by Gordon B Hinkcley, Dale Carnegie's classic three books, and children's books...check out my domestic idea blog for the children's books...I had actually added those books on my blog before I saw your current question....what a kawinkydink!! WE must have reading on our mind as the summer is winding down and exhaustion is setting in!!

My latest favorite for a good read is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It really made me consider the good attributes and the bad attributes that we learn from our parents and that our children will hopefully, or hopefully not, learn from us. It'll make you want to be a better parent in all aspects. It's a good one.
Another one I love is called Ina May's Guide To Childbirth. I like to have my babies all natural and this book helped me to really see birth as something natural that our bodies know how to do. In it women share their natural birth stories and they tell them in a way that makes it exciting and beautiful rather than scary and painful. I read from it every time I feel a little nervous about going into labor pain med free and it helps remind me of how awesome birth really is and gets me all excited.
I'm going to have to think for a little bit to decide on my third book.

Ahhh, I just finished reading the Glass Castle. I have to say that it had quite an effect on me as well. It's hard to describe what I felt while I was reading...I feel like it helped me find some answers to some questions I have had for a long time. It was very hard to read; it made me reflect a lot on my childhood and come to appreciate it in some ways and analyze it in other ways. It also gave me so much perspective into a piece of life that I have never been exposed to. It helped me have some compassion for sure. I am sorry that is so vague. But I appreciate the thoughts that the book provoked in me. So I guess even though I JUST read it I have to say Glass Castle is also on my list of three too. Still thinking on numero tres!

Yeah, it really makes you think about things. And I don't really know why. It just does. I'm glad you loved it too. I loved it so much I made Zach read it after I finished. It's not his style (meaning, it wasn't written by a General Authority... jk) but he liked it too.
